As host of what is being called the first-ever “Diversity in Tech Awards,” New York nonprofit Code/Interactive group will honor individuals and organizations that have have made an impact on the local community by making diversity a priority in STEM — science, technology, engineering and mathematics — education at an event this evening.

New York’s first chief technology officer, Minerva Tantoco, is scheduled to deliver the event’s keynote speech at the award ceremony, which is being held at the Bowery Hotel.

The seven honorees include:
-CSNYC, the nonprofit behind Computer Science For All, a 10-year, $80 million plan to bring computer science education to every student in the New York City public schools
-Digitalundivided, a social group that develops software programs with the goal of increasing the active participation of urban communities, especially women, in tech.
-Julia Geist, CS student and NYC Tech Talent Pipeline Member.
-Ruth Mesfun, educator and founder, People of Color in Tech (POCIT).
-Jeff Palladino, principal, Fannie Lou Hamer Freedom High School.
-Jerelyn Rodriguez, co-founder and CEO, The Knowledge House.
-Hank Williams, co-Founder, Platform (Posthumous Honor).

“We’re proud to recognize the people who have opened doors and created opportunities for young talent to thrive in the tech industry,” Michael Denton an executive director at Code/Interactive said in a prepared statement. “Our students are exhibiting in White House Talent Fairs, building their own apps, coding in all kinds of languages, working for the top tech companies—all thanks to the tremendous efforts of those we’re honoring and those joining us for this special event.”
