Oregon tech companies sign diversity pledge

Technology companies in Portland, Ore., have signed a “tech diversity pledge” to improve the representation of women and underrepresented minorities.

Wednesday’s announcement came amid growing attention to the lack of inclusion in the technology industry. Intel, Oregon’s largest private employer, has been one of the companies at the forefront of the effort to be more inclusive.

Technology workers in Oregon reflect the industry’s demographics in Silicon Valley and elsewhere: They are mostly white men.

Thirteen executives of mostly smaller tech companies signed the pledge which commits them to gathering and submitting demographic data. The companies will also release annual reports and will share tips on hiring and retention as well as educating employees on unconscious bias, the executive said, but were not more specific.

The tech leaders reflect the disparity in their companies and in the industry at large. Only one of them is a woman.
